Gas Detector Training

Course Duration:

Course Location: 

All OH&S Consulting training is performed face to face at your premises or a Training Venue can be arranged (at an additional fee).

 

Course Intention: 

This course is intended for personnel who are required to work in hazardous areas where there is the potential to be exposed to flammable, toxic or oxygen deficient atmospheres. It provides participants with the necessary skills to competently perform routine gas testing prior to performing hot work in a hazardous area, entering a confined space or detecting for other specific gases that have the potential to be flammable, explosive, toxic or oxygen depleting.

 

All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.

 
Learning Objectives & Outcomes: 

Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the different properties and hazards of the most common gases that occur within operations specific to your site.

  • Identify the upper & lower explosive limits of various gases in the air.

  • Identify the effective locations to test for gas or vapours.

  • Recognise the properties of different gases and vapours inherent in operations.

  • Demonstrate the correct procedure in detecting the presence of respirable, toxic and combustible gases. Demonstrate the most effective location for detecting the most common gases.

  • Recognise and competently operate the different portable gas detectors used by industry.

 

Course Contents: 

  • Legislation and company standards

  • Responsibilities of Gas Testers.

  • Common gases detected in the workplace (ie - Oxygen, Methane, Hydrogen

  • Sulphide).

  • Review of Confined Spaces on site.

  • Basic Properties of flammable liquids and gases (ie. Explosive Ranges, Toxicology, Vapour Pressure, Flash point, Boiling point, Ignition sources LEL and UEL).

  • Principles of Fire and Explosion.

  • Classification of hazardous substances.

  • Gas Detection Process, Instruments and interference issues.

  • Gas Tester Locations.

  • Gas Testing duration and frequency (according to the Permit to Work System).
