HOW HYDRATED ARE YOU?

  • Many medical authorities recommend we each drink 2 litres of water per day to remain hydrated.

  • Most mature adults lose about 2.5–3 litres of water per day. Water loss may be more in hot weather and with prolonged exercise.

  • In 1/3 of Aussies, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

  • Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3% (limit mineral water consumption as they contain high sodium).

  • One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of dieters.

  • Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

  • Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

  • A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

  • An air traveller can lose approximately 1.5 litres of water during a three-hour flight.

  • People who are hydrated are at less risk of developing kidney stones and in women urinary tract infections.

  • Fat cells cannot be broken down unless you are hydrated.

  • Drinking more water is the best method of reducing fluid retention.

  • Exercisers in hot weather need to pay close attention to hydration because they can lose two litres of fluid an hour just by sweating!
